The Color Purple

Celie and Nellie.

If you haven't seen this show, I would recommend you go see it.  Although I didn't cry, it was one of the most moving shows I've ever seen, and the music was phenomenal.  Really, the show was Broadway quality.  It is worth the $52.50 you'll pay to see it.

Shug Avery performs for the town.

The story is about Celie, the girl in the blue dress in the picture above.  Her pa rapes her when she's young, and she has two children by him, which he gives away.  When the young plantation owner comes into town looking to marry Nellie (the girl in the yellow dress--Celie's younger sister), her Pa refuses.  Instead, Pa gets rid of Celie by giving her to the young plantation owner, despite the young man's protests that Celie is ugly (who doesn't want her for his wife unless he can have Pa's cow as well).  Her husband beats her, never shows her and ounce of kindness, and hides her sister's letters from her.

The show was a lot about overcoming abuse (the song Hell No! really showcases this) and knowing that God will bring people into your life when others leave it, and he will never leave us alone.  Everything will work out in the end whether in this life or the next type of theme.  Look at your life and see what God has done!
