HAAY #8

Seen X-Men Origins, Wolverine?  Yeah, he's Gambit.  I didn't know that until I looked him up, though.  I only remembered him in The Covenant as Pogue Parry.  So, yeah.  I hadn't done a HAAY in awhile, and thought I ought to get around to it, what with Spring Term started up and all.

Goodbye to my Favorite Player

Manny Ramirez was always my favorite player on the Red Sox when he played for them.  I was sad when he left to the Dodgers.  Even though I was, and am, a Red Sox fan, I watched Dodgers games just so I could watch Manny play, unlike when Johnny Damon left the Red Sox for the Yankees, when I just stopped being a fan altogether.  Leaving the Red Sox for the Yankees is just traitorous.  I can't tell you stats or any really cool things about Manny.  What I can tell you is that I loved to watch him play baseball.  That he was a great outfielder, and a fantastic hitter.

I'm not an avid baseball watcher.  I love the game, sure, but I don't follow the MLB or know all the teams.  I just like to watch the game.  Generally I root for who ever is winning.  Except for when the Cubs, Giants, Yankees (given, right?), or Reds are playing.  I don't care for those teams, and will always root against them.  Still, there was something special about watching Manny Ramirez play.  Maybe it's because I grew up watching baseball, and then when I hit Junior High, and the Red Sox were doing great, I saw Manny as a star player on the team.  Here's a guy that can hit the ball.  He may have some "performance drug" issues, but there's no denying the guy has some extreme talent.

As soon as I read that Manny Ramirez had retired, I ran up to campus so I could have a copy of this article in print.  It's big.  The article took up two full pages in the paper.  I was going to scan it in, but it won't fit on my scanner.  That big.  So, it'll probably end up taped on my wall/pasted somewhere I can see all the awesome pictures of Manny and read about him.

The game will never be the same without him.

Me and Finals

Finals are over, and that's a really good feeling.  Even though I don't know what my grades are for sure, I can guess.  I've got a B+ in humanities, a B+/A- in mythology, an A- in american literary history, a B+/A- in creative writing, and an A in my intro to the english language class.  I am really hoping for those two B+/A- classes to be A- because that would make my gpa a 3.35.  Then, with any luck, by the end of my Spring Term I could have a 3.4, and then I'd be on my way to writing an honors thesis.  And, that also means I will have met one of my goals for the year.

I really fret over that honors thing.  When I start something, I finish it 99.9% of the time.  That .1% of the time I don't finish something I start, I get really annoyed/upset/disappointed/angry.  So with honors, I really feel that I need to finish it, not just as a testament that I am in the top 1% (it's less than 1% that actually graduate with honors, which is weird, because it isn't THAT much extra work to do it) of my graduating class, not necessarily GPA wise, but by having original work published by the time I get my undergrad.  To me, that's huge.  And graduating with honors looks great on a resume.  In a competitive world, it's always good to have something that fantastic on a resume.

So, on that note, I'm spending the rest of the week relaxing before Spring Term starts.  I plan on crocheting, getting a much needed haircut, going to the play my brother's in at the UofU, and hanging out with Megan Moulding.  Unfortunately, I had to go to the doctor today.  Swollen lymph nodes are never fun, especially when they make it hard to breathe.  Still, now that I know what's wrong, I fully plan on taking meds and making sure I enjoy the weekend.  I have to get better anyways, since I refuse to miss class unless I'm too sick to leave the house, which I currently am not.  Speaking of which, that's another high note of this last semester.  I only missed one day of class in two of my classes.  I never missed a day in my other three classes.  I'm usually sick three or four times during a semester, and I only got sick once this semester, so I thought that was awesome.  Overall, semester success.

I got a letter from Savannah Combe, too.  She's awesome, and enjoying her mission.  I knew she would. A girl as exuberant as her will enjoy all that a mission has to offer.  Been gettin' letters from Andrew Schull as well, which is cool.  He's comin' home sometime mid-June.

And to celebrate the end of the semester, I bought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, and have already watched all the additional scenes.  I also bought the soundtrack to The Princess and the Frog.  I've been wanting it for awhile now, but never got it.  Worth every penny of the $16 I paid for it.

This is the catchiest tune.  I walk around singing it all the time.

Shark in the Water

I really love V.V. Brown.  She's not very popular in America.  The one song that made the hit list was Shark in the Water.  However, she's got talent, and she's fun to watch perform.  Personality, and she can sing!

This was the best sound quality I could find of this song, although the film is crappy.  Bear with me.  Listen without watching if it bothers you.

She swears.  But if you've heard the song before then you'd already know that.  Just watch at your own risk.

I bought her album when it came out last year.  I hope that she gets another one released here in the US.

I Was Thinking About...

Things I occasionally mourn over:

  • That I can't learn by osmosis.
  • That I'm not British.
  • That I'm not rich enough to go anywhere I want.
  • Homework is still required in college.
  • That I ever got married.
  • That I'm single.
  • That I don't get asked out on dates.
  • That I lack the motivation to be productive.
  • The overuse of the word like.
  • The amount of time I have to spend asleep.
  • That all the really good looking guys like blonde bombshells.
  • That most of the really good looking guys are jerks.
  • That the guy in my class from New Zealand is in the army.
  • That I overanalyze everything.
  • So many books, so little time.
  • The price of gasoline.
  • The price of groceries.
  • The 10,000 hour rule

And there's so many more that I'm not going to name.  That's probably because I don't mourn over them as frequently.  I'll let you decide which ones on the list I seriously mourn over, and the ones that I just think of and wish after.

Update on Resolutions 3

1. New friend made.  Actually, there's possibly two new friends in that.  And one, Hilary, likes Doctor Who, and (this will please you Megan!)  The Mighty Boosh!

3. I signed up for a social dance class for Spring term.

4. I've got 7 pounds left to lose before I make this goal.  Not bad.

5. This one's a rather impossible one.  I've got some regrets already.  However, sometimes I think people need to have a few regrets in order to know when they've got it good.

6. I'm about 1/3 of the way done with another afghan.

9. I've now seen four out of twelve art exhibits for my honors great works list.

11. Despite having run out of food in my house a couple times this month, I've been good on eating at least two meals a day.

16.  I've managed my time well this month.

17.  I've been more social this month, mostly due to March Madness.  I've really enjoyed some of the things I've gone out and done with groups.

20.  My two books this month I read were Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell and The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.  And yes, I did actually enjoy both of them.
