Stand Up Against Hate

I grabbed a school newspaper yesterday to read about the new Natural History Museum, but as I turned the page to finish the article, I came across this.

It made me sick then, and it makes me sick now.  The last part is what really gets me.  If you're against LGBT hate like this, stand up against it.  I mean, do we really want to condone the words "Just as if we wouldn't want a child to grow up with a prostitute for a mother or a serial killer for a father, we shouldn't accept a lesbian, gay, or transgender parental model for young people"?  I sure won't just breeze past them.

Some of the kindest, best people I know are gay.  I would be happy to hear that they were parents.

Taylor Petty also states that "We must avoid, at all costs, letting children grow up in a home where horrible sins are modeled as acceptable."  By horrible sins Petty strictly means breaking the law of chastity.  If Petty is going to make that argument, Petty might as well start calling to take more than half the children of the world away from their parents.  Most people in the world today can say they've had sex out of wedlock, which is considered breaking the law of chastity.

What Taylor petty has written is deplorable, but it is even more deplorable that a newspaper would choose to print this hate, especially my campus newspaper.  I am calling for a formal apology from the newspaper for this terrible choice that they've made.  I can accept that the Daily Universe is a very right wing, conservative newspaper, and chooses to print very conservative content.  However, there's a a large difference between conservatism and hate.

The above letter is hate, and should not have been printed.

Sure, there's some LGBT hate everywhere, but that doesn't mean newspapers should print it.  Printing such hate only encourages people to revile and bash people in the LGBT community.

If you're against what the Daily Universe did, as I am, then take a stand and let them know exactly what you think of their reprehensible choice to print this hate letter.

Beyond the Mad

Today has been one of those days for me.  You know what I mean: the ones where it goes beyond the sneaky hate spiral.  I spent the day unhappy about everything, for unknown reasons. Perhaps I should reexamine my life.  Anyways, then I realized that my netbook doesn't properly show the new post creator on the screen, and it just was the topper on the whole issue of having to take care of a two year old when I was supposed to be enjoying my vacation at Bear Lake, because if it weren't for her I would never have had to get online to blog about it.  This is just a huge excuse and rationalization for not wanting to take care of a toddler over the weekend.

I generally wouldn't care, so I don't know why I care now.  She's my cousin's daughter.  Maybe it's because I really wanted to relax.  Also, since I didn't get to work out today, I can't justify all of the terribly unhealthy things I ate today.  It made me realize that when I'm angry or anxious about anything, I tend to eat more, and I would hate to let my lack of self control deter me from my goal of being 135 by the time I get to BYU.  I'm six pounds away, and I really don't want to blow it now.  I keep telling myself I would have gone on at least a bike ride today, but then it had to go and rain with a huge thunderstorm.  Don't get me wrong, thunderstorms are great, but not with a two year old.

Days like today remind me that lifestyle changes are hard, and sometimes we fail.  The point is to get back up and going again.  The don't let life get you down thing.  I would all it a ploy, but that is a little cynical for the context I'm using it for in this post.  Yes, I realize that this post is a completely lame one, and possibly bordering on ridiculous for the self-pity posts that are undeservedly posted on here, but I needed to get it off my chest, and I don't have my paper journal up here.  I forgot it.  So forgive me my faults of having problems with tending kids when I don't want to, and the repercussions that has on the way I view my life, and in turn my personality.  It's really a good thing that I don't want to have kids---anytime soon.

Angry Moment

So, I hate it when my brother makes me a liar.*  He's on the activities council on the stake level for our YSA ward, and he kept telling me that things were a mess and we get the toughest jobs because nobody communicates anything to us.  He told me we had way too much fruit for the breakfast on the 24th, that the activity was announced an hour late in every ward in the stake for monday, and that nobody takes into consideration how things should be organized to make things more efficient.

When I was talking to my grandparents not ten minutes ago and we were making small talk, I mentioned some of these things when we were talking about the new YSA Stake getting on its feet and running.  Well, when I was talking my Dad came down to talk, and I know he heard some of what I was saying.  After they left I got talking with my Dad, and I know he was disappointed in me.  Why?  My brother had exaggerated/lied to me about EVERYTHING.  Essentially, everything that came out of my mouth was a lie, even though I didn't know it at the time.  It's times like this that I really loathe my brother.  He exaggerates/lies to make things seem more dramatic or exciting, and then wonders why people don't just know he's exaggerating/lying to make a point.  I hate to tell you Dylan, but that makes you look bad, because it means no one can trust what you say, and it makes me look bad because I TRUSTED you to tell me the truth.

It's times like this that make me realize why I am having a hard time being tolerant of anyone.  Nearly everyone around me that were my friends in the past are complete liars and manipulators, and I'm sick of it.  Tell the truth, don't exaggerate, and don't just tell part of the truth, tell the WHOLE story, or you can just forget about talking to me.  If you want my advice, listen to it.  Don't go asking me for it and then get angry when I call the kettle black.  I'm sick of people hanging around me just because my family has some money.  Sorry to tell people this, but it's pretty obvious to me when you try to be my friend just for my money.  I don't have thousands or even hundreds of dollars to spare on my friends, and neither does my dad.  Being a friend means being there no matter what social status someone is at in their life.  Really, I don't know a single person that I could call a friend who has a terrible, destitute life, so nobody should be coming to me with sob stories about how my family is rich and should give them money/pay their bills.**

After being married and divorced within a year, I have come to learn what true friendship is, and that it is based on honesty and trust.  I realize that those things take making a leap of faith, but I feel that one should only take that leap so many times per person before they know where that person stands on the friendship ladder.  Only those that really are of a higher breed make it to the top, and by higher breed I mean have a moral standard that doesn't let them lie to their friends to get what they want.  It's obvious to others when your motives are less than pure, people, and everyone needs to come to that realization and grow up.

*He's done this to me several times now, and he's not the only one.  I often find myself being discredited as a liar because the people I get my information from are complete liars.  Now that I am able to realize this, I am ready to be done with people like that.
**I don't think that anyone that reads this blog has ever done anything like this to me, and if they have it was unintentional.  The people this applies to probably don't read this, or ever will read it, which is probably why it ended up on this blog and not on facebook.  I don't think I really want to cause major arguments with people, but I did need to express how I felt.
